Kinja'd!!!

I want to make a trip from NY to AZ in a rental car. I am not gonna spend crazy money on exotic car and I’m not gonna cheap out on some econoshitbox either. What do you recommend for long drives? What rental company has it?

Before you go crazy with camaro(n) dude, I hate high belt lines. I want to be able to stick my elbow out of the window and enjoy the breeze without the elbow being above my head.

Also it should have some oomph cuz oomphs are fun

Having some oomph will be tough for something comfortable. For a long trip like that if the rental company has any Volvos or Buicks maybe go for one of those for comfort.

Hyundai Sonata or Buick LaCrosse. Both widely available in rental fleets across the country, both surprisingly fine (not fun, “fine”) to drive, both quite comfortable, quiet and full of features to help pass the long miles, which both are also good at doing. The Buick will be a little comfier, the Hyundai will be a little more efficient. Avis has Ford Fusions, and I think I’ve seen them at Enterprise too... might be a good choice too. the new Fusion is quite nice for long trips, but the rental-spec ones probably won’t be a comfy as the Hyundai or LaCrosse.

1) Take 1000$.

2) Go on craigslist and acquire a running beater.

3) Bring coolant.

You might call some of your local rental places and ask if you can talk to someone about "repositioning" — one-way rentals are usually extremely expensive (like 2-4x as much as returning to the same location), but for cross-country trips you might be able to get a manager's ex-vehicle or something and maybe score a nice discount for helping them out.

I don’t think they’d want to broadcast it because it’s not part of their normal pricing model. But as they say, everything is negotiable. I bet if you find a regional manager, s/he'll know everything that needs to go where, and your rental will potentially save them labor or transportation costs. Might be a hassle, but if you're talking about spending several hundred dollars, it's worth a shot.

Unless the rental company has older cars, you’re probably not going to get out of having a high beltline.

As for what to look for, anything midsized and up should suit you just fine since you don't want an econobox. I know Budget generally uses FoMoCo products. Enterprise doesn't seem to have a particular favorite brand. And Avis/Hertz seem to use whatever as well. It really depends on what you want and what you'll be comfortable with.

normally, I drive a car around town for at least 6 months before i venture out into another state. I know my luck. As soon as I get far enough to not be able to call a buddy to pick me up, the car will turn into a rolling firebomb with flat tires and transmission dropped about 12 miles back

We had a 2016 Buick LaCrosse rental for two weeks while my wife’s CX-5 was in the shop. The LaCrosse was smooth, quiet, powerful, and comfortable. And supported Android Auto/Apple CarPlay.

That’s now two for the Buick.

I had put flowers by the tombstone that was Buick Park Ave, but maybe it’s just got a different name now?

I second Ash’78's idea. Sometimes people do crazy one way rentals and it leaves a lot with a car they don’t really want. You can get a good discount because you are basically returning it.

If you’re going specifically from NYC to Phoenix, SilverCar.com is in both and they only rent out (silver, I would assume?) Audi A4s. According to this support page, they do offer one-way rentals: https://support.silvercar.com/hc/en-us/artic…

You will not be able to get a rental car without high beltlines, nearly every new car is like that. However, a mini van rental should alleviate that concern though. And they actually make for really great cross country treckers. Decent gas mileage, lots of space (maybe even free lodging), and sure to be comfortable while just cruising forever.

I like this idea. Cross country, one way road trip is probably going to cost like $400 anyways (or more if taking your time). So you would only have to sell the car for like $600 to break even. Then you can try to have a manual and you get to learn some useful mechanic skills along the way!
